Cargill hands over the 129th school in Vietnam, investing in education for the next generation
New Phu Tho facility expands access to safer, more conducive learning space for local children
Cargill today marked the inauguration of its 129th Cargill Cares school in Vietnam, with a new facility for the Yen Nghiep campus of Dai Dong Kindergarten in Dai Dong Commune, Phu Tho Province. The project provides four new standard classrooms, helping address a shortage of learning space and enabling the school to consolidate several of its satellite classes into a safer, more centralized learning environment.
Cargill’s fourth school project in Phu Tho represents an investment of approximately VND3 billion (around US$110,000). Alongside four classrooms, the facility includes a playground and security fences, creating improved learning conditions for ~380 students at the Yen Nghiep campus of the multi-site Dai Dong kindergarten.
“Every child deserves access to a quality learning environment. Through Cargill Cares, we work closely with local communities and partners to understand their needs and help improve educational facilities in rural areas. This reflects our belief that doing the right thing means looking beyond our business to the communities where we operate, putting people first and working together to make a lasting difference,” said Nguyen Ba Luan, Country Representative, Cargill Vietnam. “After 30 years, we remain committed to building on this shared effort to expand access to quality education across Vietnam.”
Cargill’s school building program was established in Vietnam in 1996 to support students in agricultural communities in rural areas, by providing access to quality education in safe and conducive learning environments. Coordinated through the Cargill Cares Council – an employee-led initiative – the program brings together employee volunteers, customers, suppliers, and community partners to support the planning and construction of schools.
“Each new classroom will be filled with children’s laughter, and the schoolyard will be a place where they can play, explore and grow with confidence,” said Ms. Bui Thi Phuong, Principal of Dai Dong Kindergarten. “We hope that every day at school will be a happy one for our children, giving them a positive start to learning and growing. This is the lasting value of Cargill Cares’ 129th school project, not only for Dai Dong Kindergarten, but for the wider local community.”
Following the completion of the 100th school in 2020, Cargill Cares set a new goal of building 150 schools, 100 libraries and playgrounds in Vietnam by 2030, reflecting the continuing need for improved educational infrastructure in rural communities.
To date, Cargill has mobilized ~ US$7 million to build 129 schools across 32 of Vietnam’s 34 provinces, serving almost 20,000 students annually. The program has also established 45 libraries and playgrounds for kindergarten and primary school children, providing additional spaces for reading, growing and exploring new knowledge.
The program’s benefits extend beyond the construction of new facilities. An impact assessment of Cargill’s School Building Program found improvements in school infrastructure, student enrollment, classroom functionality, teacher retention and student-to-teacher ratios, alongside wider community benefits including employment, health, nutrition, and water, sanitation and hygiene.
The latest milestone builds on Cargill Cares’ education initiatives in 2026, following the opening of its 125th school in 2025 as part of the company’s 30th anniversary in Vietnam. Since February, Cargill has completed and handed over four more school sites in Son La, Da Nang and Phu Tho, including the newly inaugurated 129th school, adding 13 classrooms for ~750 students through a combined investment of ~VND9 billion. In September and October, it also handed over four “Sach Hay Cho Em” libraries in Ninh Binh, Nghe An, Ca Mau and Dong Nai, bringing the program to 45 libraries and playgrounds. The four libraries represent an investment of VND270 million and serve more than 2,000 students.
Cargill Cares will continue working toward its goal of 150 schools and 100 libraries by 2030, building on three decades of support for education and community development across Vietnam, as part of the company’s mission to nourish the world in a safe, sustainable, and responsible way.
